Mixing and mastering are two of the most misunderstood stages of music production.

Most artists understand the basic idea. Mixing combines all the individual elements of a song into a finished stereo mix, while mastering prepares that finished mix for release. But beyond that, expectations can vary enormously.

Some people expect mixing to completely transform weak recordings. Others assume mastering is where a song suddenly becomes loud, wide and “professional”. Timelines can be misunderstood, revisions can become confusing, and sometimes the engineer’s actual role is very different from what the artist imagined.

None of this is unusual. Most musicians are understandably focused on writing, performing and producing music rather than learning the finer details of audio engineering.

So let’s clear up some of the most common misconceptions.

  1. “Mixing will fix everything”

A professional mix can make an enormous difference to a song, but it cannot completely overcome problems that exist earlier in the production process.

If a vocal performance lacks emotion, the guitar tone is fundamentally wrong, the arrangement is overcrowded, or the drums were poorly recorded, there are limits to what can be achieved at the mixing stage.

Modern technology gives engineers incredible tools. Timing can be adjusted, vocals can be tuned, noise can often be reduced and problematic recordings can sometimes be repaired surprisingly well.

But there is an important difference between enhancing a strong recording and trying to rescue one.

The better the performances, recordings and production decisions are before mixing begins, the more the mix engineer can focus on making the song exciting, balanced and emotionally engaging rather than spending time solving preventable problems.

A great mix generally starts with great ingredients.

  1. “Mastering will fix the mix”

This is probably one of the most persistent misconceptions in audio.

Mastering can refine tonal balance, dynamics, perceived loudness, stereo presentation and translation. It can help a finished mix sit comfortably alongside other commercial releases and ensure it performs reliably across different playback systems.

What mastering cannot easily do is reach inside a stereo mix and independently change everything within it.

If the lead vocal is significantly too quiet, the kick drum is overpowering the bass, a guitar is painfully bright, or a backing vocal is distracting from the lead, those issues are generally better addressed in the mix.

Think of mastering as the final optimisation stage rather than an opportunity to rebuild the record.

The stronger the mix is when it reaches mastering, the more mastering can concentrate on refinement instead of correction.

  1. “Professional mixing means changing my sound”

Some artists worry that sending their music to an engineer means losing control of the sound they created.

It shouldn’t.

A good mix engineer is not there to replace the artist’s identity with their own. The job is to understand the intention of the production and help communicate it more effectively.

That is why rough mixes, reference tracks and communication are so valuable.

If you have deliberately created a dark, distorted, aggressive or unconventional sound, the goal should not automatically be to clean it up. Likewise, if a vocal is intentionally intimate rather than huge and glossy, there is no reason it has to become something else simply because the track is being professionally mixed.

Professional mixing is not about making every song conform to the same template.

It is about helping the song become the strongest version of itself.

  1. “Mastering is just making the song louder”

Loudness is certainly part of mastering, but reducing the process to loudness misses most of what mastering actually involves.

A mastering engineer is listening to the complete record from a different perspective. Tonal balance, dynamics, low-end control, stereo image, consistency, translation and overall presentation all matter.

The mastering process may involve extremely small adjustments. Sometimes a fraction of a decibel in the right place can have more value than a dramatic EQ curve or heavy compression.

The goal is not simply to make the waveform bigger.

It is to make the finished record feel cohesive, controlled and ready for its intended release environment while preserving the character of the mix.

Sometimes that means making something louder. Sometimes it means resisting the temptation to push it further.

  1. “The engineer should know exactly what I want without me explaining it”

Experience helps an engineer interpret music quickly, but engineers are not mind readers.

Two artists can use exactly the same words and mean completely different things.

“Warm” might mean less top end to one artist and more analogue saturation to another. “Punchy” could describe stronger drums, greater transient impact or simply more perceived energy. Even words like “big”, “wide”, “vintage” and “modern” are highly subjective.

Good communication makes the process much easier.

Reference tracks are particularly useful because they turn abstract language into something audible. Even better, explain what you like about the reference.

You might love the vocal level of one song, the drum sound of another and the low-end character of a third. That information gives the engineer a much clearer picture than simply saying, “Make it sound commercial.”

  1. “A first mix should automatically be the final mix”

A first mix is not necessarily a failed mix simply because the artist requests changes.

Mixing is a collaborative process.

The engineer is hearing the raw material from a fresh perspective, while the artist may have lived with the song for months or even years. There will occasionally be differences in interpretation.

Perhaps the artist imagined the guitar slightly louder. Maybe a backing vocal carries more emotional importance than the engineer initially realised. Perhaps an unusual production detail was intentionally prominent in the demo.

This is exactly why revisions exist.

The objective should not be to avoid revisions at all costs. It should be to make revisions clear, purposeful and productive.

  1. “More revisions always mean a better result”

While sensible revisions are a healthy part of the process, endless revisions can eventually work against the music.

After enough repeated listening, perspective begins to disappear. Decisions become increasingly focused on tiny details rather than the emotional effect of the song as a whole.

A vocal goes up half a decibel, then down again. A guitar moves slightly left. The snare becomes brighter, then darker. Versions start sounding different rather than necessarily better.

This is where experienced judgement becomes particularly valuable.

Sometimes the best advice an engineer can give is that the mix is finished.

That does not mean dismissing legitimate feedback. It means recognising the point where further changes are unlikely to improve the listener’s experience.

  1. “Mixing and mastering should be almost instant”

Modern technology has made many processes faster, but professional mixing and mastering still require focused listening and decision-making.

A mix engineer may be balancing dozens or even hundreds of individual tracks, managing dynamics, automation, tonal relationships, stereo positioning, effects and transitions while constantly evaluating how those decisions serve the song.

Mastering involves fewer source files, but the listening is highly detailed. Small changes need to be assessed carefully because they affect the entire mix.

There is also value in stepping away from a project and returning with fresh ears.

Faster does not automatically mean better.

At the same time, an experienced professional should have an organised workflow and communicate realistic turnaround expectations. The goal is not to drag the process out unnecessarily, but to allow enough time to make considered decisions.

  1. “Expensive equipment is what makes professional engineers better”

Professional equipment absolutely has value.

Accurate monitoring, acoustic treatment, quality converters, reliable analogue equipment and a well-designed working environment all contribute to better decision-making. These things should not be dismissed.

But owning professional equipment does not automatically create professional results.

The greater value is knowing what you are hearing and understanding what to do about it.

Experienced engineers have developed judgement through thousands of hours of listening, comparing, making decisions and learning how those decisions translate beyond the studio.

The equipment provides the environment and tools.

Experience determines how effectively they are used.

  1. “The engineer’s job is purely technical”

Perhaps the biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering are purely technical services.

They are technical, but they are also deeply creative.

A mix engineer is constantly making decisions about where the listener’s attention should go. Which element should dominate a particular moment? How should the chorus feel larger than the verse? Should the vocal feel intimate or commanding? How much space should exist between instruments?

Those are musical decisions as much as technical ones.

Even mastering involves aesthetic judgement. A technically measurable improvement is not necessarily a musical improvement if it removes the character that made the record interesting.

The best engineers understand both sides.

They know the technology, but they also know when not to use it.

What Artists Can Do to Make the Process Better

The most successful mixing and mastering projects usually have a few things in common:

  1. The song is genuinely ready.
    Performances, editing, production and arrangement decisions have been completed before the project reaches the engineer.
  2. Files are prepared correctly.
    Clear labelling, correct exports and organised delivery allow the engineer to concentrate on the music rather than administration.
  3. The artist communicates their priorities.
    Rough mixes, references and concise notes help establish the intended direction.
  4. Feedback is specific.
    “Bring the lead vocal slightly forward in the second verse” is much easier to interpret than “Something doesn’t feel right”.
  5. There is mutual trust.
    The artist should feel comfortable expressing what matters to them, while also being willing to consider the engineer’s perspective.
  6. Everyone remembers the listener.
    Ultimately, the goal is not to create the most technically impressive waveform or win an argument over half a decibel. It is to make the song connect.

Final Thoughts

Professional mixing and mastering are not magic buttons, and they are not repair services designed to compensate for every problem that occurred earlier in production.

They are specialised stages of the record-making process where experience, technical knowledge, objectivity and musical judgement come together.

The best results happen when expectations are realistic, communication is clear and both the artist and engineer are working towards the same goal.

A professional engineer should bring something valuable to the music, but they should never lose sight of whose music it is.

Ultimately, mixing and mastering are there to help the artist’s original idea reach the listener with greater clarity, impact and confidence.

And when that relationship works properly, the technology becomes almost invisible.
